Tema: TIFF, Telluride, NYFF y AFI Fest 2020

Empiezan a conocerse detalles de los festivales de otoño que se celebrarán en Norteamérica desde los meses de septiembre hasta el inicio de diciembre, y el primero de ellos es el festival de Toronto, el más importante de cara a una temporada de premios que se prevé completamente atípica...

El TIFF ha anunciado hace apenas una hora que la edición de este año será un híbrido entre proyecciones físicas (limitadas), y una serie de eventos virtuales (la mayoría), entre los que se encontrarán conferencias de prensa, eventos de la industria, y muchas de las “alfombras” rojas habituales:

El plan actual es que el festival presente 50 nuevos largometrajes, cinco programas de cortometrajes, así como charlas interactivas, reuniones con el reparto de las películas, y preguntas y respuestas con el elenco y los cineastas. Para los largometrajes, los seleccionados se proyectarán (siguiendo las normas de distanciamiento social) durante los primeros cinco días del evento. Desafortunadamente, todavía no hay una lista completa de los films que se seleccionarán, pero el TIFF ha dicho que "Amonita", dirigida por Francis Lee, "Another Round", del director Thomas Vinterberg, "Bruised", la primera película de Halle Berry como directora, "Concrete Cowboy" del cineasta Ricky Staub (protagonizado por Idris Elba), "Fauna", del director Nicolás Pereda, "Good Joe Bell" del director Reinaldo Marcus Green (protagonizado por Mark Wahlberg), "Spring Blossom", de Suzanne Lindon y "True Mothers" de la directora Naomi Kawase se proyectarán en el evento.



El festival canadiense se celebrará, con todas estas peculiaridades, entre el 10 y el 19 de septiembre.

Parece que este año no tendremos edición del festival de Telluride. Los organizadores del evento difundieron un comunicado ayer martes diciendo que se cancela esta edición:

After months of intense due diligence around physically holding an event, we’ve come to the heartbreaking but unanimous conclusion to cancel this year’s Labor Day celebration of film in Telluride.

While there will be those who might say they’re not surprised by it, that this was inevitable, we beg to differ. It didn’t have to be this way. Until the past week or so, we had a very good plan to put on the SHOW safely. But with a seemingly unending number of new cases of Covid-19 and the national chaos around it, even the best strategy is threatened by this out of control environment. No matter how much many of us wear our masks and observe social distancing protocols, the pandemic has worsened rather than improved and the health and safety of you - our passholders, filmmakers, the people of Telluride and its surrounding areas - cannot be compromised.

As you may know, we have been working cooperatively with our fellow fall film festival partners to champion global cinema and its artists. We hope that many of you will seek out and discover the titles we’ve selected for this year’s program at the New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, or Venice Film Festival, or when they’re made available on a wider basis. We will announce soon what we have carefully programmed in the hopes that you will experience as we did, the best in film this year. There are some incredible, powerful, and beautiful gems and we’re excited to extol their virtues when the time is right. Follow these titles, support them. We intend to champion them outside of the festival as best we can.

For those who have supported us and believe in what we are trying to do, our gratitude is enormous. Thank you. We will need you in the coming months in many ways. Let’s light candles now to conjure a better 2021 and Labor Day weekend in Telluride, together, under the stars in the mountains doing what many of us love the most. Al parecer, probablemente hagan algo similar a Cannes y anuncien algunos de los títulos que tenían previsto presentar en el festival...pero eso es todo.

Una pena.

la verdad es que es una pena enorme. Porque Telluride, con ese marco tan especial, de pueblo entre montañas, y esa cantidad de estrellas que, gustosamente, van allí a presentar sus propuestas, es un Festival diferente a los demás.
En cualquier caso, habla del caos tan absoluto que existe en la pandemia en la actualidad en Estados Unidos, y que desde luego, tiene a Trump como su máximo exponente.
También, de todas formas, el resto de Festivales se van a ir repartiendo, si no pasa nada en los demás países, las películas interesantes de esta temporada.

El festival de Toronto ha ido revelando cosillas estas dos ultimas semanas. Entre ellas que Kate Winslet recibirá un premio homenaje a toda una carrera como actriz:

Hace tres dias también se supo que American Utopia, una versión filmada del hit de Broadway de David Byrne, dirigida por Spike Lee, abrirá el festival:



Entre las novedades de este año, y para dar visibilidad a la parte virtual de esta edición, se ha anunciado también la figura del “Festival Ambassador”, casi cincuenta cineastas, actores y actrices, que intervendrán en los diferentes eventos. Acostumbrados a los casi trescientos films que se podían ver en ediciones anteriores, estas cincuenta películas son una selección realmente exigua, que denota el estado de la industria durante este (extraño) 2020.

Ahora con esta película protagonizada por Winslet (a la que homenajean en el festival) y por Ronan, se antoja apuesta segura a nominaciones importantes en los Oscar.

Sí, siendo muy aventurado mi comentario, por algunos comentarios en twitter y viendo el homenaje a Winslet, tal vez sea ella, a día de hoy la apuesta más segura en la carrera de premios de este año (que aún no sabemos sí ésta se va a dar de manera normal o incluso si va a existir).

Pero bueno, que sí creo que el ambiente está ya preparado par que un segundo Oscas a Winslet sea considerado algo totalmente previsible. Más tarde o más temprano creo que lo obtendrá.

El problema es que no es seguro su estreno en cines, y el director ya ha comentado que su deseo es que se vea en cine, no la quiere estrenar en streaming

Otra cosa que no se ha comentado es la ausencia (significativa) de “The French Dispatch”, la peli de Wes Anderson. Unido a que el estreno se ha cancelado “sine die”, todo parece indicar que el film se irá a 2021. Puede, sin embargo, que aún sea elegible para los Oscars si al final la estrenan antes de febrero.

La idea de revelar los títulos por parte del festival es “recomendarlas” con la esperanza de que el público busque estas películas en otros festivales de otoño. Con los Premios de la Academia a celebrar el 25 de abril, hay menos presión sobre estos films para presentarse para los premios, pero también hay una gran cantidad de películas acumuladas desde el inicio de la cuarentena, lo que hace que sea una temporada competitiva....

Esta edición se iba a celebrar este año del 3 al 7 de septiembre.

Vamos con el festival de Nueva York,

que hoy ha anunciado que LOVERS ROCK de Steve McQueen sera su peli inaugural (25 Septiembre)

En lo que sera su premiere mundial,

Se trata de una de las pelis de McQueen, que ya se anuncio para Cannes, que forma parte de las 5 que ha rodado para la BBC y AMAZON, dentro de la serie antologica llamada SMALL AXE, y que se espera emitan BBC y AMAZON a finales del año

De paso el Festival tambien adelanta que otras 2 pelis (Mangrove y Red, White and Blue),de esta antologia de McQueen, tambien se veran en el Festival

El film que clausurará el Festival de Nueva York de este año será French Exit, de Azazel Jacob, protagonizada por Michelle Pfeiffer y Lucas Hedges:

Basada en el best-seller del novelista canadiense Patrick deWitt, el film es una historia satírica centrada en Frances Price (Pfeiffer), una “socialité” de Nueva York que, tras descubrir el cuerpo de su marido en su dormitorio, se va a esquiar durante el fin de semana. Finalmente, ella y su hijo sin rumbo, Malcolm (Hedges), venden sus posesiones y se mudan a París para vivir una nueva vida.

¿Podemos considerar a la Pfeiffer como la gran rival de Winslet? en este sentido puede que Pfeiffer cuente con la ventaja de no haber ganado nunca (aún) y con el factor de coprotagonis¡mo que pueda tener el personaje de Ronan en Ammonite.

Desde luego este podría ser su año. Va a ser una temporada totalmente atípica, y si su interpretación destaca (los años de “Mother”, “Donde está Kyra” o “Asesinato en el Orient Express” había demasiada competencia), podría ser el Oscar que tanto tiempo se le ha negado

Ya veremos a ver qué pasa, porque como bien indicas, la temporada, como poco, es atípica.

Pese a haber ganado hace relativamente poco, Frances McDormand probablemente sea una apuesta segura para la nominación. Pero un Oscar, a estas alturas, para Pfeiffer suena colosal. Y difícil. El camino de en medio es el de Kate Winslet. Quién sabe?

Planeta África 25

Creado en 1995 por Cameron Bailey, Planet Africa fue un programa del Festival “dedicado al cine de África y la diáspora africana”. Programado por Bailey, luego June Givanni y Gaylene Gould, funcionó como parte del Festival durante 10 años. Mientras se celebra su fundación hace un cuarto de siglo, TIFF también destacará el movimiento Black Lives Matter de 2020 con eventos especiales bajo el lema Planet Africa 25.

El TIFF ha seleccionado cuatro nuevas películas para esta Sección Oficial que encarnan el espíritu del Planeta África:

TIFF también ha anunciado 35 cortometrajes como parte de la sección Short Cuts. La selección de 2020 “incluye los esfuerzos de dirección de ex alumnos del TIFF y los descubrimientos de los programadores del festival que juntos presentan una mezcla poderosa y ecléctica. Además de una amplia gama de géneros, la selección de cortometrajes del festival también abarca una variedad de perspectivas, voces y talentos emergentes y establecidos de Canadá y de todo el mundo ". ¿Hay hilo del Festival de San Sebastian 2020?

Luca Guadagnino presidirá el jurado oficial del Festival de cine de San Sebastian

Hoy que se acaba el Festival de Toronto me da la impresión de que este año ha pasado muy desapercibido, por lo menos el de Venecia y el de San Sebastián están dando titulares, reportajes, pero el de Toronto ha pasado como si nada.

El de San Sebastián no es solo en medios españoles, hay medios de varios países hablando de San Sebastián que apenas dedicaron líneas a Toronto.

Si bien es cierto que con "eco y nombre" de Venecia* solo ha salido la película de Nomadland, y de Toronto "solo saldrá" la película que gane el premio fuerte.

De San Sebastián hay que reconocer que están marcándose un buen rumbo diferenciador y ha salido de ahí la ultima de Woody Allen, que no irá a la temporada de premios pero si a los círculos art-house internacionales (y eso ya es logro) y la serie de TV de Patria, que incluso fuera de España ha dado sus buenos titulares.

NOMADLAND ha ganado tambien en Toronto

En los últimos veinte años no me suena que haya pasado...

De todas formas era hasta cierto punto previsible. Las pelis americanas estrenadas en Venecia y Toronto han sido muchas menos este año, y eso unido a que otros “rivales” a priori fuertes de la temporada se han desinflado (Ammonite por ejemplo), ha propiciado que los premios y halagos se hayan concentrado en la peli de Chloe Zhao.

Veremos qué pasa en Nueva York con films como Lovers Rock o French Exit...

Ayer leí en Variety que era la primera vez, la de Nomadland este año, que la ganadora en Venecia triunfa entre el público de Toronto. Lo que dice el Doctor de la situación de este año tan especial es muy cierto. Aún así, quiero destacar por citar alguna distinta, el debut en la dirección de la actriz Regina King (ganó el Oscar de reparto por El blues de Beale Street). One night in Miami, que ha sido una de las dos finalistas en el favor del público canadiense, tiene una pinta buenísima y podría ser otras de las presentes en la temporada de premios. Veremos.

El AFI Fest ha revelado sus primeros títulos de este año:

Opening Night

“I’m Your Woman“ Directed by “Stargirl” filmmaker Julia Hart and written by Hart and Academy Award nominee Jordan Horowitz (co-writer of “Stargirl” and producer of “La La Land”), the 1970s-centered crime drama follows a woman, played by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Emmy and Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan, who is forced to go on the run after her husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.

Closing Night

“My Psychedelic Love Story” — Directed by Errol Morris. The film explores the underbelly of LSD through the saga of Timothy Leary, and how his doomed relationship with Joanna Harcourt-Smith helped collapse the 1960s counterculture.

Special Presentations

“The Father” — Living alone in London and nearing 80 years old, Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) has refused another nurse that his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman) has set up for him. Exuberant and independent, Anthony has struggled with his memory beginning to slip away. Anne announces she is moving to Paris with a new boyfriend, but later in the living room Anthony sees a stranger claiming to be Anne’s husband. Who is this man? Confusion sets in. Academy Award winner Hopkins delivers a brilliant performance of a man with dementia, creating a powerful cinematic experience of memory and loss. Based on his award-winning play, Florian Zeller has crafted a moving and insightful portrait of a cruel disease and the heartbreak it brings.


“Fireball” — Leave it to Werner Herzog to interrupt a world-renowned planetary scientist who has just made the simple yet astonishing statement that, “We are all stardust. Every element in our body was synthesized in other stars before it got here.” Herzog waves his hand in front of the camera. The scientist looks momentarily perplexed and then Herzog blurts out: “I think I am not stardust. I am Bavarian!” After a pregnant pause, the scientist bursts into laughter. It is a quintessentially Herzogian moment. In this fascinating and delightful scientific, cultural and philosophical treasure hunt, Herzog and his co-director, the volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer, crisscross the globe, seeking answers to the great mysteries locked inside the flaming balls of interplanetary debris that have hurled themselves at our defenseless planet for billions of years.

”Pink Skies Ahead” — Los Angeles, 1998. After dropping out of college and moving back home to live with her parents, Winona is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Skeptical of her doctor’s opinion — she hasn’t had a panic attack after all —Winona carries on with her wild lifestyle. Only when things begin to truly unravel around her, does she reluctantly decide to see a therapist and face her truths. Jessica Barden gives a magnetic performance as the passionate and struggling Winona. The directorial debut film of Kelly Oxford, based on her essay “No Real Danger,” “Pink Skies Ahead” is a powerful and empathetic portrait of mental health often hidden beneath the surface.

“Really Love” — Set in a gentrifying Washington, DC, a rising Black artist, Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe), spends most of his days pouring his heart into his paintings but still struggles to find his place in the prestigious and competitive art world. At a gallery show, Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing), an impressive and intelligent law student, catches his eye. A chance encounter is one thing, but the stars align and they meet again, leading to a whirlwind romance. When both Isaiah and Stevie hit crossroads in their careers, they are forced to consider if their relationship is a love for a season or a love for a lifetime. In director Angel Kristi Williams’s debut feature, she delivers a poignant look at the sacrifices we make for careers and life-changing relationships. This well-crafted script by Felicia Pride and Williams is complemented by an impeccable soundtrack and incredible art.

“The Reagans” — Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, this four-part Showtime series focuses on the rise and reign of America’s ultimate power couple: Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Chock full of evocative archival footage and illuminating contemporary interviews, “The Reagans” asserts Nancy’s central role in her husband’s career, shines a light on the darker aspects of the Reagans’ climb to power and provides a revelatory perspective on how the political tactics used in the ‘60s and ‘70s are a progenitor of our current national politics.

“A Suitable Boy” — 1951. In a newly independent India, passionate literature student Lata Mehra defies tradition, and her meddling mother’s wish to choose her a husband. Torn between family duty and the excitement of romance, Lata embarks on a journey of love and heartache as three very different men try to win her heart. Also threatening to break with tradition is the charming but directionless Maan Kapoor, whose romantic entanglements begin to jeopardize his father’s political career. As Lata and Maan attempt to shape their futures, India too is coming of age. Only a few years after independence from British colonial rule, tensions are high as its people prepare to campaign and vote in their first democratic general election. A Lookout Point production for the BBC, internationally distributed by BBC Studios.
