"There is true beauty in the despair that pervades "The Place Beyond The Pines."
Film.com“The Place Beyond the Pines” has better pacing and far less muddled themes than his first feature film.
In Cianfrance’s world, there are no heroes, only brutal shared truths, protagonists filled with coiled rage, set against menacingly dark hues of Schenectady, New York.
"My admiration for Cianfrance is all the greater for the melodramatic risks he's willing to take, whether or not every last one of them pays off."
The Telegraph
"Lengthy and dense film packed with a handful of great performances, The Place Beyond the Pines has great ambition but not nearly enough accomplishment."
We got this coveredThe comparisons to Drive will continue no doubt, but while you were curious about the past of the Driver, you are almost too frightened to find out about Luke’s past. We only get mere hints, but they are enough to really drive the point home about how deeply troubled a character he is. The pain and sadness in Gosling’s eyes are enough to make you weep, and just as quickly forget some of the despicable things he does during the film. It is a tortured performance, and is one that Gosling completes with ease.
"A film so thematically and dramatically rich, soulful and suspenseful, it carves itself into your consciousness and refuses to leave."
MoviedexAfter helming 2010’s beautifully raw relationship drama Blue Valentine (also starring Gosling), writer/director Derek Cianfrance hasn’t lost his knack for sobering authenticity. He creates moments rather than scenes, capturing each exchange in a way that feels caught rather than calculated.
"An epic crime sage that constantly subverts audience expectations. Incredible."
JoBloEach actor anchors a different part, giving this the feel of an epic trilogy confined to one film. Running a lengthy, but never oppressive 150 minutes, PINES is a big movie made intimate by Cianfrance's technique. Imagine something like GODFATHER if it were directed by John Cassavettes and you'll have an inkling of what this is.
"The Place Beyond the Pines is ambitious and epic, perhaps to a fault."
