Ben Affleck’s ‘Batman’ Returns In ‘The Flash’: Updated

Anthony Breznican exclusively reports in Vanity Fair today that Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman in the upcoming Flash solo film project. Affleck’s appearance caught many — including me — off guard, due to repeated studio denials (and a bit of cynicism on our parts, let’s be honest) in the aftermath of so many negative reports about his experiences during the Justice League reshoots. But there may be even more exciting developments to the story, and it may involve HBO Max after all, too...

If confirmation of Affleck’s return in The Flash weren’t enough, there are rumors circulating that Affleck had second thoughts about moving on entirely from the role (partly thanks to the “Release the Snyder Cut” movement) and might be open to additional appearances, perhaps even a miniseries on HBO Max. We’ll see how it shakes out, but first thing’s first — Affleck is back in Flash.

Breznican’s article also confirms an earlier scoop by Umberto Gonzalez at The Wrap, which revealed Michael Keaton was reprising his version of Batman in The Flash. That announcement frankly put the nail in the coffin, in my mind, to the last chance Affleck might return for another bow in the cowl. The leaking of the Keaton news helped diminish the likelihood of the Affleck news leaking or being believed as readily, intentional or not. Well played, Warner.

Let me make a full mea culpa on disbelieving the earlier rumors, and for doubting the chances of Affleck’s return once Keaton was involved. Two great Batmen in one movie? Didn’t seem possible. But here we are, and now the rumors of a possible Affleck HBO Max series are more believable too — not just more so, but I hear new rumors today that plenty of folks at HBO Max would like to have a Batman miniseries or film project with Affleck.

I am not just happy to admit I was wrong about Affleck returning, I’m happy to be wrong, as I was obviously a huge fan of his Batman and regretted when it became apparent he wouldn’t write-direct his own solo project. Having that back on the table again, alongside Matt Reeves’ building his separate incredible Batman world, it’s a pretty good moment to be a Batfan.


The reveal of Affleck’s return suggests strongly that other rumors about The Flash and the multiverse are likely true as well. This would mean the film establishes a crossover between roughly three distinct DC worlds — the Snyderverse, the CW/DCU television/streaming universes, and the theatrical franchises. Crossover between these worlds and the ability to mix and match them into various forms, retaining the ability to cross them over again in the future, will shape a new future path for the larger DCEU across platforms and mediums and worlds.

We’ll hear plenty of details about all of this at DC FanDome, which now covers two different full days with content. The first is this Saturday, August 22nd, at DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes, and the second is Saturday, September 12th, at DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse. Be sure to check out the panel this Saturday at 11:15am titled “Multiverse 101,” there’s bound to be some new info about the nature of The Flash and the future of the DCEU there.


Update: I know some other sites are saying they hear this news of Affleck’s return in The Flash does not signal any current plans for an HBO Max series, and that could be true. But I hear other things suggesting HBO Max has been brought up, and let’s just be frank here — we are getting this news today after weeks of denials of any project being in the works at all, especially with Affleck involved.

Having already doubted the rumors of this once, and after hearing strong official denials, I’m not inclined to dismiss the other rumors so fast anymore. If anything, today’s announcement should make us all slower to discount the rumors. Remember, the denial is about anything being in the works or planned right now — that’s a common dodge for something that could be discussed and might just not be in any official stage yet. Plus, we all know the track record of denials about all of this stuff lately.

Dios.

Ahora sí que ha subido el nivel esto. De momento la dupla keaton + affleck, pese a ser la película de Flash, me llena de emoción.

Este proyecto, dentro de los actuales de DC en marcha, si sitúa cerca de la inquietud que tengo de ver a D. Johnson en Black Adam. El primer proyecto evidentemente por expectación y por justicia, es la JL de Snyder, vaya bendición será ver eso.

Grandísima noticia. Esta película va a ser un auténtico festín.

Y además, no hace falta echar mucha imaginación para suponer que Affleck habrá firmado un contrato para más películas. Al menos JL 2 y, por fin, esa película de Batman para la que según Jay Oliva escribió el mejor guion del murciélago que había leído nunca. :)

Viendo el DC Fandome, se presentó que Flash contará con un nuevo traje, más orgánico.

Madre mía, cómo se está poniendo el universo DC, ¿no os parece?. Me atrae muchísimo ahora mismo todo o casi todo lo que nos van a traer:

- Escuadrón Suicida de Gunn.
- Aquaman 2 de Wan.
- Wonder Woman 1984 de Jenkins.
- Justice League de Snyder.
- Batman de Reeves.

Después saldrán buenas o malas películas pero a priori no podría estar más contento con el rumbo que están tomando los proyectos de DC, la verdad. Hype a tope. Solo nos falta un Man of Steel 2.

Hace cuatro años se daba por supuesta su participación en la peli (que por aquel entonces iba a dirigir Rick Famuyiwa), pero la producción ha sufrido tantos cambios desde entonces que, por lo visto, ha habido que negociar otro contrato para este “nueva” iteración del proyecto.

Una noticia que se esperaba, Ray Fisher ha quedado fuera del elenco de la próxima película de DC, "The Flash".
El papel de Cyborg fue eliminado del guion, por lo que este papel no se le dará a otro actor.

Se suponía que Fisher iba a aparecer brevemente en la película, pero con las continuas declaraciones del actor en contra de la cúpula de Warner, se ha decidido prescindir de el.

A priori no me da el perfil de Supergirl, pero habrá que esperar y verla en la película. Lo que no me gusta es que la introduzcan en una película de Flash y no de Superman, y lo que me temo, es que si gusta, el dúo dinámico (Emmerich-Hamada) la van a sustituir por Superman, como si lo viera

A mí lo que me parece una chorrada es que hayan buscado expresamente una actriz latina, ya que decían que los castings habían sido en varios países latinoamericanos. Si haces un casting abierto y acabas escogiendo a una actriz latina porque es la que mejor encaja, OK. Estás sacrificando fidelidad al original por otros factores, y ya se verá si compensa. Pero partir de que quieras un cambio de raza de forma premeditada suena a cuotas y tonterías de corrección política que no deberían tener lugar en decisiones creativas.

Pero en fin, la chica tiene mucho ángel, mucha vida en su expresión. Esperemos a verla en la película.

Como chiste está bien, pero todos sabemos que el personaje tiene una historia en varios medios, con una raza y unos rasgos determinados. Se puede entender no limitarse a esos rasgos en un casting, claro, pero buscar expresamente actriz de una raza distinta determinada sí es concesión a las cuotas, es obvio.
