‘Gravity’ Blasts Off to $1.4 Million Opening on Thursday
The highly-anticipated “Gravity” — starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney — scored a $1.4 million opening on Thursday night, setting it on a course for a $40 million haul on its opening weekend.
Pic is also on pace to break records when it comes to 3D ticket sales. According to online ticketing site Fandango, 91% of tickets sold for “Gravity” are in 3D, outpacing even “Avatar.”
“Gravity” cost roughly $100 million to produce and generated rave reviews following showings at the Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals.
Should the film hit the $40 million mark, it would be one of the largest openings in October. “Paranormal Activity 3″ currently holds the record for the largest launch during this month with $52 million.
“Runner Runner,” starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, also opens this weekend and is expected to debut in the $10-12 million range.
