The 'Star Wars' creator chose Los Angeles over a rival proposal in San Francisco.
Los Angeles residents will no longer need to travel to a galaxy far, far away for a piece of Star Wars history.
George Lucas has selected L.A. over San Francisco to be home to his $1 billion museum, with the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art set to feature pieces from the filmmaker's personal collection, including memorabilia from Star Wars and other films, vintage photographs and an impresive selection of traditional paintings.
"After extensive due diligence and deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is pleased to announce plans to build the museum in Exposition Park in Los Angeles," the museum's board of directors said Tuesday in a statement. "We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support we received from both San Francisco and Los Angeles during our selection process. Settling on a location proved to be an extremely difficult decision precisely because of the desirability of both sites and cities."
Lucas had previously unveiled two different designs for his proposed Museum of Narrative Art, one for Los Angeles’ Exposition Park and a similar proposal for the same museum to be built on San Francisco’s Treasure Island. At one point, Chicago also was in the running, but those plans were scrapped in June after it faced opposition from a local preservation group called Friends of the Parks.
"Now we turn our attention to finalizing the details and building what we believe will be one of the most imaginative and inclusive art museums in the world — a global destination that all Angelenos and Californians will be proud to call their own," the board of directors statement reads.
The futuristic design for the museum comes from Chinese architect Ma Yansong.
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti is set to hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m. to speak more about the museum, which its supporters have said will bring 1,500 construction jobs to the city as well as an additional 350 permanent jobs.

George Lucas' Museum Is Bringing These Rare 'Star Wars' Pieces to Los Angeles
There also will be works from Norman Rockwell and other iconic artists.
A little bit of a galaxy far, far away is coming to Los Angeles, but Star Wars is just a part of the plans for George Lucas' $1 billion museum.
There will be concept art for The Phantom Menace and a look at models for X-Wings, but there also will be paintings from Norman Rockwell and Edgar Degas, stills from classic movies and digital art from Andy Warhol. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art aims to build on Lucas' collection to educate visitors about the power of storytelling — and not just in the sci-fi realm.
