Quote:
The first hard rumor to come out after Joe Carnahan left his post as director on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 was that "Alias" creator JJ Abrams was taking over as director. It was a rumor that seemed to have some steam but then abruptly fizzled out with names like Brett Ratner and John Woo also popping up. Now Abrams name is back in the mix and the rumor has become official - he will direct M:I3 based on a rewrite on Frank Darabont's current draft. Cruise flew to the "Alias" set to meet with Abrams (the genesis of all these rumors) and talk to him about coming aboard M:I3. But with his commitments to "Alias" and his new ABC series "Lost" prevented him from accepting the offer outright. But in the last 48 hours, as Cruise and Spielberg's deal for WAR OF THE WORLDS began to come together, Abrams came back into the mix once it became apparent M:I3 would see delays well into next year and scheduling would no longer be a problem. This week in Berlin, crew members for M:I3 were given their last paycheck and told to return home. How this delay affects the participation of M:I3 co-stars Carrie-Anne Moss, Kenneth Branagh and Scarlett Johansson remains to be seen. As Variety points out, the move comes as a bit of redemption for Abrams whose script for SUPERMAN was once so hot at Warner Bros. before it was unceremoniously dumped last month for Bryan Singer's new take on the material. Wonder if M:I3 and SUPERMAN will eventually face off at the box-office? The news of MISSION's delays will meet welcome faces at Fox who were preparing a showdown on July 1, 2005, the day both films were scheduled for release.
