I used Freestyle Transparent Raw Umber. Mix it with alcohol (more alcohol than paint to begin with.)
Just mop it on, seriously. Quick strokes work the best so it doesn't seep in to the fabric as much. I would use a plastic/nylon bristled round brush (those uber-cheap ones) so that the brush will release the solution. I would use one with about 1/2" long bristles.
It will look really dark at first (like how your hair is darker when wet), but will lighten up as the alcohol and paint dry. I would start with a light coat, let it dry, then go back through. The cuts in the leather actually suck up a little more paint, which is great, and gives it that weathered look.
I got mine REALLY dark (which I like). The pictures are FAR redder than it is in person. The picture of it on the table is the closest to reality, and even that shows a little too much red.
I used the same mixture on the fabric/netting stuff.
Keep a damp paper towel or cloth nearby to wipe your fingers on, and to catch any droplets that hit the legs or armor.
Good luck! (You can't mess this up because the worse it looks, the better, LOL!)
