Catilina's first name is a reference to Julius Caesar, the future Roman dictator, who at the time was another populist Roman politician. Caesar was not implicated in the Catilinarian conspiracy, but famously sought to prevent Catiline's execution.
Although the traditional narrative portrays Cicero as the defender of republican values and Catiline as an unscrupulous seditionist, Coppola wanted to offer a revisionist take. Historian Mary Beard suggested adding the Julius Caesar reference, as "in Suetonius's version young Julius Caesar was very much in cahoots with Catiline.
The name "Vesta" is a reference to the Vestal Virgins, Roman priestesses who swore an oath to remain chaste for 30 years. The real-life Catiline was accused of seducing a Vestal Virgin, an offense punishable by death.
Clodio Pulcher´s death is an allusion to the death of Benito Mussolini.
