Lionsgate Picks Up Sundance Film ‘Buried’
Rodrigo Cortés’ Buried started a bidding war in the early hours of Sunday morning following a midnight screening at the Sundance Film Festival.
Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, and two others were vying for the rights to the indie film, according to Deadline.com today. But Lionsgate was able to successfully secure domestic distribution for the film, says the LA Times, for a reported $3.2 million in the first major acquisition out of the festival.
The one man show is literally Ryan Reynolds on screen for 94 minutes, trapped in a coffin somewhere in the deserts of Iraq. Claustrophobia sets in as the civilian contractor uses a failing cell phone to call for help.
The script by Chris Parling (a great read, by the way) landed on the 2009 Black List as one of the most liked screenplays in Hollywood. Reynolds took the lead after reading it and a 15-page manifesto by Cortés on his plans for the movie shoot, which lasted 17 days with Reynolds crammed in the confined space.
Reviews out of Sundance have been extremely positive. Calling it a “cinematic achievement,” Peter Sciretta from Slashfilm awarded the “minimalistic” film a 9 out of 10. Katey Rich at CinemaBlend said Reynolds is “as mesmerizing and engaging as ever.” Neil Miller from FilmSchoolRejects cited the leaps in logic the other reviews mentioned, but dubbed it “an interesting and bold piece of filmmaking.” Quint from Ain’t It Cool News wrote it’s “just plain awesome.” Finally, FirstShowing’s Alex Billington gave it 9.5 out of 10 and said it’s “incredible filmmaking that will be talked about for years to come.”

Coffin-set thriller premiered on Saturday night at Sunday
Ryan Reynolds of 'Buried'
The Sundance Midnight favorite "Buried" -- also know as the Ryan Reynolds in a Box movie -- has landed a distribution deal with Lionsgate.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Lionsgate ponied up $3.2 million for the North American rights to "Buried," closing the deal on Sunday (Jan. 24), just one night after the claustrophobic thriller's world premiere.
Lionsgate has had previous luck with Sundance titles including "Open Water," "Saw" and "Precious."
Directed by Rodrigo Cortes, "Buried" focuses on a civilian contractor (Reynolds) in Iraq who survives a roadside bombing and wakes up inside a coffin, buried under the ground. Using only a dying cell phone, the character has to try to raise a $5 million ransom or else figure out a way to escape.
"'Buried' is a powerful reminder that all you really need for an unforgettable movie experience is a great story, inventive filmmaking and brilliant acting," Jason Constantine, Lionsgate's president of acquisitions and co-productions, says in a statement.
La verdad es que el argumento tiene buena pinta y las impresiones desde Sundance aún mas. La verdad, es que ahora mismo se ha puesto en una de las esperadas por mí este año.
