Hi Everyone!
I received and installed my HT2550 today.
To note, I'm an enthusiast, not a professional, but I've been following and constantly refreshing multiple tabs I have saved for all of the newer 4K PJs (UHD50/60/65), Viewsonic, Vivitek, and of course the HT2550/W1700. I'm coming from a W1070.
My setup is a 5.1.2 hooked up to a Denon AVR-X3400 with an XBox One X (4k) for now.
Initial setup...I've got a fixed 120" screen in a 95% dedicated theater that is mostly light controlled. I dismounted my W1070 and simply bolted up the HT2550. I knew this going into it, but the throw ends up being around 108" or so, so if I decide to keep the PJ, I'll need to move it back about 18" or so to fill the 120" space.
Ok, the bad out of the way first...out of the box, the reds are really blown out and oversaturated. This was with 4K games (Forza Horizon 3), Netflix, Amazon, and 4K content on YouTube. I had to back the saturation by at least 30%. I'm not great with calibration, so I didn't touch much else. There is a dark gray border as has been pointed out by multiple sources. This was made obvious since the picture didn't fill up my screen, but I'm hoping it's not too obvious once the screen is filled up. Lastly, light spill...no one else noticed it (wife and child), but it's there. It's noticeable only in dark scenes, but it's overhead and about 2-3' forward and then also protrudes out the left side a few feet (I have the PJ ceiling mounted). Those are my initial negatives.
The pros...I only had 2 sources for 4K content so far (I know, I know).
The first was Forza Horizon, which looked great. I turned HDR on and all the details/specs/checkmarks showed up properly in the Xbox video settings out of the gate (this was using a 3 year old HDMI cable that is a 25' run, though I did notice the handshake had quite a delay). To note, I did plan accordingly and have 3 different active 25' HDMI cables including their slim run optical cable. The next 4K content I watched was YouTube (yes, not ideal, I know) and it looked great, but the reds were REALLY blown out. Using my Xbox, I downloaded the Amazon app and tried to pull up 4K UHD content (Arrival, Goliath) and neither would show up in 4K, only 1080p. If anyone has any ideas/solutions for that, that'd be great. I'm thinking of picking up an Nvidia Shield tomorrow in hopes that makes a difference?
The fan noise compared to my W1070 is significantly quieter. I could barely hear it whereas the W1070 has always had a noticeable fan noise. Definite plus, especially if I find I end up keeping it and need to move it back, closer to my head/ears.
Controls/ease of use were great. Simple menus and easy controls, nothing to complain about there.
So, that's about it. Not comprehensive, not proofread, and a review from quite the AVS commoner.
Here are some questions I'm hoping you can help with.
Will upgrading to a faster optical active HDMI cable (assuming it's working as intended as I know they can be finicky per the 75+ page HDMI thread) limit the handshake times? If I need to run a new HDMI cable, I have to pull the new cable through with the existing in-wall HDMI cable (any tips or pointers on this?).
Any Xbox One X users, any tips/pointers to get 4K UHD content to display using the Amazon app?
Final thought:
I need to play with the settings/colors a lot more to dial in a picture that looks good to my untrained eye. So far it's working great out of the gate. Because I'm lazy and don't want to move the actual mount 2' to get the 120" picture, if the UHD50 comes out being just as good as this BenQ, because the throw is the same as my previous W1070, I'd likely buy it for that benefit alone. My feeling is that this is the first generation of 4K projectors, there hopefully will be big advances in PQ (and hopefully price drops), and when the market matures, a new staple PJ will be released and then I can move my mount at that point...but who knows for sure?
If you have any other questions, please let me know!
