Director Michael Mann will develop Frankie Machine as a star vehicle for Robert De Niro at Paramount Pictures, says Variety.

De Niro and Jane Rosenthal produce through their Tribeca Films. Alex Tse has just been set to do a major overhaul of the concept under Mann's supervision.

The drama is an adaptation of Don Winslow novel "The Winter of Frankie Machine." De Niro will play Frank Machianno, a mob hitman who has retired to run a bait shop. He agrees to help the son of a mob boss resolve a dispute with another Mafioso but is forced to turn into Frankie Machine again when he realizes he's been set up to be killed.

De Niro came aboard the project when Paramount bought the book in November of 2005. A draft was original written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien.

De Niro and Mann previously teamed for 1995's Heat.

Hombre, De Niro se dedica ultimamente a hacer productos alimenticios ("El buen pastor" no la he visto), pero con un buen director y un buen guión yo creo que puede volver a regalarnos una gran interpretación. De acuerdo en que se ha acomodado.... pero no creo que se le haya olvidado actuar.

Pues parece que hay otros intereses por parte de Mann y que incluyen a Johnny Deep:
The Hollywood Reporter says that Johnny Depp and Michael Mann will sit down this week to discuss teaming up for a film about the Depression-era crime wave.

Mann has long been interested in mounting a screen adaptation of Brian Burrough's nonfiction book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34" for Universal.

Mann -- who has considered taking the helm of Columbia's spy thriller Edwin A. Salt but has not committed to that project because he believes it needs a rewrite -- has an open slot. And Depp was to have starred in Warner/Initial Entertainment's Shantaram followed by Warner Independent's The Rum Diaries, but both of those projects were postponed last month.

The trade says Depp is said to be eyeing the role of bank robber John Dillinger. Along with Mann, Kevin Misher is on board as producer; Robert De Niro and his partner Jane Rosenthal, who originally optioned the book, have been involved as executive producers; and the studio is looking at a March start in Chicago if all the elements come together.

Segun horas perdidas se confirma el proyecto de Deep y Mann y empezarán a rodar en marzo:
Según Variety en marzo comenzará a rodar Public Enemies a las órdenes de Michael Mann.

Esta producción para la Universal está ambientada en el Chicago de los años 30, cuando los agentes del Gobierno intentaban frenar la oleada de crímenes que asolaban la ciudad y en la que leyendas del crimen organizado, como John Dillinger, campaban a sus anchas. Depp interpretará a Dillinger, considerado el capo más importante de esa época. Michael Mann es el autor del guión y se ha basado en el libro que escribió Bryan Burrough en el año 2004. La película será producida por Michael Mann.

La producción comienza en Marzo.

Empire films, ampliación del reparto con un cast muy variopinto, la verdad.

The cast of Michael Mann's Public Enemies just keeps getting dishier - and today it overtook The Prestige in the Prettiest Cast Ever stakes. As well as Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in the two lead roles, it's just been announced that five more have joined the cast, led by recent Oscar-nominee and long-time French bird Marion Cotillard, as well as Step Up's (and now GI Joe's) Channing Tatum. Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Dorff and Brotherhood's Jason Clarke are also onboard.

In the film, Depp plays legendary outlaw John Dillinger, with Cotillard set to play his main squeeze Billie Frechette. Tatum has been typecast as outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd (fun fact: check out the photos of the real Floyd online - not that pretty). Ribisi has been (arguably also typecast) as Alvin Karpis (nicknamed Creepy, because of his unnerving smile - not a member of Dillinger's gang).

Dorff is close to a deal to play Homer Van Meter, another member of the gang (fun fact: he underwent plastic surgery to escape the police, but tried to kill the surgeon when he disliked the results). Finally, Clarke will play gangmember John "Red" Hamilton, leaving Bale all on his own to pursue these hardened thieves. Let's hope he gets some support soon, and that it's good-looking enough to push this film over the top, past The Thin Red Line and into the number one spot on the Handsomest Cast Ever list.

A mi la de Milius, con todas sus irregularidades, me parece muy buena. Pero me imagino que Mann la hará mucho más épica.
