Variety reports that Spain’s Jaume Balagueró (pictured) and Paco Plaza have teamed up to co-direct a new horror project called REC, which just began shooting in Catalonia. Filmax’s Julio Fernández is producing the movie, described as an “experimental thriller” centering on a TV reporter and her cameraman who, while covering a local fire station late one night, receive a call from an old woman trapped in her house. When they go to investigate, they hear screams from inside, which leads to a series of horrific experiences. Cast with unknowns, REC will be ready for release by next summer. Plaza helmed SECOND NAME and ROMASANTA (a.k.a. WEREWOLF HUNTER); Balagueró’s credits include THE NAMELESS, DARKNESS and FRAGILE, the latter of which will open Stateside next year. Following REC, Balagueró will direct Filmax’s THE CERTAIN LADY, based on Jose Carlos Somoza’s novel LA DAMA NUMERO TRECE, about a scholar who discovers that a group of muses who have inspired great poets throughout the ages are also witches who can use words to deadly effect. —Michael Gingold
